But lies, as her uncle Bran was fond of saying, were like a cup of Kaskar whiskey: If you’re in for one, you’re in for a dozen. Occasionally when writing ( well, trying to) a review words fail me and they have again with Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames. In the treatise, Mari outlined that the path of least evil lies always with the swift extirpation of those who oppose the faith, and therefore mercy in any form must come after the meting out of righteous anger.

From a story about mercenary bands, and the monsters they fight, I take away life lessons, and serious things to think about.

Not only was she hopelessly late for work, but her father, naturally, had yet another rule when it came to his daughter going for drinks with strange boys. It's adventure she wants - and adventure she gets as the crew embark on a quest that will end in one of two ways: glory or death. Additional support during the suppression was provided to the sisters by a delegation of the Adeptus Ministorum. This new army threatens to sweep across Grandual much like Lastleaf’s did in Kings had it not been stopped by the collective might of mercenary union.

All of the characters in Bloody Rose are broken, and all seek some kind of redemption, which gives the story an emotional depth not found in many similar “genre” fiction stories. Many bands travel in an Argosy which is similar to a tour bus ( you’ve got to have somewhere for the drunken debauchery to occur) and Fable’s own is named The Rebel’s Redoubt. One stop on the tour is in Ardburg, where Tam slings drinks and cleans tables at the Cornerstone bar. In mid-late M36, Saint Mina was martyred by a sanguinary cult whilst at prayer in a shrine on Hydraphur. Terrified mutants and witches fall before its blessing, as ground won for the Emperor is consecrated in sweeps of viscera.

Derek from Canada I'm no wordsmith to explain how much I enjoyed this book, but I have read my fair share of fantasy. Tam isn’t “working as a waitress in a cocktail bar” ( Don’t You Want Me by Human League song lyric) but she is working in a bar with dreams of escaping the boring and repetitive monotony of serving drink for the rest of her life. She doubted even a dozen of them would give a band of half-decent mercenaries a run for their money. She wants to step out of her father's shadow in a majestic way by taking on and destroying a legendary beast that is infamous for its notoriousness and the fact it is rumoured to be impossible to kill.

Our story is told, with an ironic twist given the grisly fate of Saga’s bards in Eames’ first novel, through Tam’s eyes as she quickly becomes songstress to Fable, the world’s most famous band. From their first War of Faith, the sisters of the Bloody Rose made a name for themselves as brutal executioners. Eames’ plot holes are also forgivable, namely those where villains decide not to kill the heroes when they have the chance, James Bond-style, and large events that might leave the fate of the Band in question were they not located squarely in the middle of the book. A muzzle was clamped over its leonine jaw, but despite its captivity the creature still managed to look terrifying. It's adventure she wants-and adventure she gets as the crew embark on a quest that will end in one of two ways: glory or death.

In short, he's done it again, despite all the changes Eames has hit the sweet spot bang in the middle and I'm already looking forwards to where the next book will take us! Also, since Tam would likely spend her whole life slinging drinks and playing lute for coppers here in wintry Ardburg, a stroll through the Monster Market was the closest she’d ever come to adventure. Swarms of skittering predators were butchered by the sisters, squads of Sororitas were devoured by ravenous monstrosities, and before long the barren world was drenched in blood and ichor.

Whilst this in itself marked the cloak as a treasured relic, small shards of the Emperor's own armour were woven into it to ward away the blows of the enemy, elevating it to a sacred garment of incomparable spiritual significance. Such miraculous transformations are met with cries of exaltation by the recipient's fellow warriors, for they know that Mina's soul is inhabiting the body of that blessed sister. You see,” she went on, slathering every word in cloying condescension, “most bands only fight in arenas. Fable’s frontwoman wore a piecemeal suit of dull black plate slashed with red—except her gauntlets, which gleamed like new steel. The war wagon was a fortress grinding over sixteen stone wheels, with iron slats on the windows and barbed chain screens hung over the side.
