This is the best quality of No Child of Mine that we could rustle up and the quality is marginally better than other copies available on the net. But the shitty quality in a way suits the shitty mood of the movie.

So this is based on a true story and, like wow. This movie is just depressing. The fact that so many people got away with their abuses. This book deeply touched me. I've not read a book about child abuse before, and I probably never will again, frankly. It was incredibly difficult reading about Ottilie and what she endured with her parents. Every time I had to read those parts of the book, it literally made my stomach ache. I could not WAIT to be finished with it, as I just couldn't stand listening to how her parents treated her. I have a young daughter who has a favorite stuffed animal like Ottilie, and I couldn't help but think of her in this story and how devastatingly awful it would be if something like that happened to my own child. It literally felt like my heart was breaking in two for this little girl. I enjoyed the characters from the past more than the present day and learning how the curse came to be. An awful curse born of both love and selfishness has taken fathers from their daughters for generations in Essie's family. While this made for TV film is not gratuitous and with film that looks like it was taken on a potato, the performance from Brooke Kinsella in the lead role is compelling with a message that is delivered in a direct and painful way that leaves very little to the imagination. No Child of Mine is less of a horror/thriller and more of a look into pregnancy, identity and grief.

I know they don't know where she is right now," Anna whispered, brushing the hair from Alex's eyes, "but that doesn't mean..." "She's here," Alex sobbed wretchedly. "She's upstairs." There are other aspects to this novel...Alex's own childhood and adoption, Alex's issues at work, her issues with Jason, her boyfriend...her feelings of never belonging and also the mystery of her own mother...she has no clue where she is or even if she is still living.

I have never thought about the emotional baggage and burdens that social workers have to go through at work. The emotional attachments, the nasty treatments, the stereotyping. When you are a social worker, you either see humans at it's best nature, or the worst kind. There's no in between. Sadly, it's often the latter. I can't reveal too much of the story here, but I would say it is definitely a story worth reading. Over and over again. It's just so meaningful. Though I felt that the ending was a little bit rush, but like I said, it was the process that really mattered. And I truly enjoyed reading this, the way Susan Lewis intended for her readers to. I couldn't tear myself away from the book once I started reading it. I get caught up in the book every free moment I could get, in between my work and my rest time. In fact, privately, she's pretty upset about it. Essie is currently in law school, almost through, ready to take the bar exam early the following year, how is she going to make that work now? The baby will be three months old when she is supposed to sit for the bar? I was not happy with the ending as I believed that Ottilie deserved professional help for all that she'd been through, and for Alex to take her away like that was not the answer, no matter how much she wanted to come to her aid. Essie comes from a line of women who, shortly after giving birth, lose their husbands. When she starts hearing voices and noises in her house, she starts to believe the curse could be real.

It was quite hard to choose how to rate this book because the subject matter was so awful and some of the content quite horrific. The last trimester, however, was not as great to me. The pacing slowed to a snails pace and I felt that some of the chapters were telling me the same thing over and over with nothing happening. The ending was the real bummer and I felt like it was rushed - as the ending didn't start until the last chapter or so of the book. Which would have been fine if I felt satisfied with it but unfortunately it just kind of fizzled out.Initially, I was wondering if there was any connection between Isabel, Anna and Essie. Later on, it is revealed that the three women are connected by a generational curse that sees their husbands stolen from them. Told between different POVS and timelines, this story is perfect for women who have gone through pregnancy, and those who like spooky reads and fast-paced stories.
